Stories and Essays: Out of the Darkness

Every year the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention holds an overnight walk to raise money and awareness of suicide. On June 4th and 5th of 2011 the walk was held in NYC. At sunset, close to 2,000 people began the walk in Brooklyn and walked 18 miles through Manhattan and back where the event ended at sunrise. Most of the people participating are known as suicide survivors; those left behind after a loved one has died by suicide. I traveled to NY to photograph and write a story for the NY Daily News about the event along with a first person account of my own brother's suicide.
